Marchand-Arvier leads first Garmisch downhill training run, Vonn second

France’s Marie Marchand-Arvier lead the way today (Feb. 2) in the first of two downhill training runs ahead of World Cup races planned this weekend in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Though she missed a gate, Marchand-Arvier skied the 1.7-mile Kandahar course, home of last year’s world championships, in one minute, 47.85 seconds. American overall leader and winner of three downhill races this season, Lindsey Vonn was 0.21 seconds behind with the second fastest time. Italian Daniela Merighetti was another 0.47 seconds back in the third position.

Racers wore face masks and insulating tape today to protect against below-freezing temperatures (12 F) on a snowy, foggy day in the Bavarian mountains. Course crew worked to clear about four inches of snow that accumulated on the course over night.  

Austrian Elisabeth Goergl, who won both downhill and super G world championships here last year, took the fourth fastest time, 0.93 seconds off the leading pace.

Garmisch local Maria Hoefl-Riesch, coming off of her first win of the season in a super combined in St. Moritz on Sunday, was sixth fastest today.

Americans Stacey Cook and Laurenne Ross gained confidence for Saturday’s race with top-15 finishes today in seventh and 15th, respectively. Alice McKennis finished 28th ahead of teammate Julia Mancuso in 31st. Leanne Smith, did not finish.

Canadians Larisa Yurkiw and Kelly VanderBeek finished 43rd and 50th, respectively.

There is a second downhill training run scheduled for tomorrow. Racing begins Saturday with the downhill and continues on Sunday with a super G.
