Weather concerns at Val Gardena; Jansrud leads training
Norway controled the final tune up for the classic Val Gardena downhill Thursday (Dec. 13) as impending weather threatened the race and had organizers scrambling to set up alternative scenarios for the race. Kjetil Jansrud and Aksel Lund Svindal went one-two in the final test with Klaus Kroell third and Erik Guay fourth. Svindal, Guay and Kroell went one-two-three in the opening trainer Wednesday.
“It’s great to be able to share these experiences with a friend,” Jansrud said. “We are definitely a small but successful team. We are also good friends but those few minutes between clicking in our bindings, leaving the start gate and until we make it through the finish area, we are also each other’s competition.”
The Norwegian also said he does not expect to lead the pack in the race. "I believe I never was fastest in a Downhill training, certainly not here in Gardena/Gröden. In fact, I was 6.5 seconds behind the leader in both training runs two years ago. I picked a good line, but let's face it, this is a training and the race will be a whole other affair. On Saturday, many will be much faster than today. I'm happy so far but I will for sure turn it up a bit for the race as well. My chances are probably better for the Super-G so that is what I will focus on now. The Downhill training and the race are more of an added benefit for me."
The Americans had Marco Sullivan in ninth, Travis Ganong 13th and Steven Nyman 23rd. Sullivan was .91 out, Ganong 1.36 and Nyman 2.02.
With forecasters calling for a change in what has been good racing weather and with a storm set to bring snow overnight Friday, FIS race director Guenther Hujara told the team coaches that preparations have been made to able to shorten the course, change the start time and/or to hold the event in two runs.
“The forecast mentions possible snowfalls. ... We want to be prepared in the case of snow. The highest priority is the completion of the race,” he said. Moving the start to the super G start, delaying the start as far as 2:45pm from the scheduled 12:15pm and starting a pair of runs from “The Wall” section of the Saslong course are all being discussed and planned for.
Val Gardena's downhill is scheduled Saturday, a super G for Friday.
