Eastern Marriott U-16's underway at Sugarloaf
Amanda Steffey of the Stratton Mountain School drew first blood in the Marriott Eastern U-16 championships, closing from the 34th start to unseat leader Patricia Mangan of the Holimont Racing Club by a scant .04 of a second in the March 7 super G.
Burke Mountain Academy's Bridget Currier, the first racer out of the start in the title meet, posted third .12 behind Mangan.
While Burke had three skiers listed among the top 10 the other seven all represented different race programs. Mount Mansfield contributed Sandra Schoepke in fourth, Green Mountain Valley School had Ali Nullmeyer in fifth, the Waterville Valley Black and Blue Trail Smashers had Rahcel Mawrocki in seventh, The New York Ski Education Foundation had Beatrix Lever in eighth and Gould Academy had Madeline Simard in ninth. Burke added Alli Price in sixth and Madison Lord in tenth to the podium result from Currier.
Mangan reversed the order in the Sugarloaf Schuss the next day topping Steffey with Currier again nailing down third. Kathleen Utter of Green Mountain Valley School and Nawrocky tied for fourth.
In the men's super G Christian Gallagher of Green Mountain Valley School (GMVS) posted a solid win over Victor Wiacek of East Windham NY program. Third went to Stratton's Spencer Smith. Killington Mountain School had Ryan Znamierowski in fourth with a miraculous run from the 75th start position. Burke had Paul Sheils in fifth, Holimont was represented by Canadian Harry Armstrong in eighth and Colden Mrak of the New York SEF got ninth. GMVS took the lions share of top ten placings with Scott Schibli and Pate Campbell tied for sixth and Logan Slattery tied for ninth with Mrak.
Gallagher took the men's Schuss by more than a second over George Steffey of Stratton. AJ Barry, out of Waterville, was third, Jimmy Krupka of GMVS was fourth and Patrick Kenney of Burke fifth.
GMVS rocked the men's GS today (March 9) sweeping the top three slots with David Frisk getting the win, Pate Campbell second and Gallagher third. Gould Academy's William Kannegieser was fourth while Burke used a back of the pack attack to cram its skiers in the next three positions with Liam McKim getting fifth from the 65th start, Paul Sheils sixth and Jack Blanchard in seventh from start 61. Gregory Osborne, from the Okemo program was eighth, Slattery picked up ninth for GMVS and Zachary Mooney of the Eaglebrook School Club was tenth for Tri-State.
