THST: Dumont cruises to Squaw, season pipe titles
SQUAW VALLEY, California — Simon Dumont has spoken. The 20-year-old from Bethel, Maine, finished the final event of the four-stop Honda Ski Tour the way he began in Sun Valley — atop the podium.
Under bluebird skies and warming temperatures, Dumont had the two best-judged runs of the day. He scored 92.25 on his first run and 93.5 on his second to level the field and capture the victory. With Breckenridge halfpipe event winner Tanner Hall filming in British Columbia, New Zealand's Jossi Wells, 16, was the closest competition.
Battling a two-week layoff due to a broken collarbone at the Winter X Games, Wells still pulled off an unnatural 900 to finish second with a run of 87.25.
Peter Olenick, 23, of Carbondale, Colorado, threw his signature double flip, known as a Whiskey Flip, to place third. Canadian Mike Riddle, competing on borrowed skis after the airline lost his Dynastars while traveling to Squaw Valley, finished fourth.
Dumont entered Saturday's event 90 points in front of nearest competitor Riddle. With the halfpipe title all but secured, Dumont still asserted he would "throw down in Squaw Valley." Known for Kong-size amplitude and creative tricks, Dumont was good to his word in the five-hit, Frank Wells-designed superpipe that stretched beneath Squaw's Siberia Ridge. He wowed spectators with two unprecedented, almost flawless runs, stomping a huge 20-foot high hit, and nailing a truck driver 540, tailgrab 900, alley-oop five and a perfectly landed 1260.
"I knew that I had the tour all but wrapped up, but wanted to really entertain the crowd and have some fun," said Dumont in the finish corral.
Dumont walks away from The Honda Ski Tour winner of three of the four events, but not for long. Included with his $80,000 in tour prize money is a new SUV Honda Element. Peter Olenick finished second overall and Mike Riddle third.
The tour wraps up with the skiercross finals on Sunday.
