Americans Andy Newell and Kikkan Randall both crashed in their quarterfinal heats to finish 26th. Newell’s result was particularly disappointing after having the third fastest qualifying run. His fall came just before the finish line, when he was in second place.

Randall fell after getting tangled with Sweden's Charlotte Kalla during her quarterfinal lap.

Since only the top two skiers advance to the finals, both skiers were eliminated.

Chris Cook and Torin Koos did not qualify for the finals.

The sprinters now head to Dusseldorf, Germany for sprints Saturday, Dec. 20, and a team sprint on Sunday, Dec. 21.
