American halfpipe skier David Wise made the home town crowed proud today as he claimed his second consecutive U.S. at the 2009 Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships in Squaw Valley, Cali. Jessica Cumming topped the women’s podium for her first U.S. title.

Walter Wood was the men’s runner-up, followed by Clayton Vila in third. Evan Schwartz was just off the podium in fourth, followed by Evan Walls in fifth.

Today’s win caps a record season for Wise, he finished fourth at the World Championships in Inawashiro, Japan and claimed a sliver medal at the World Cup Finals in La Plagne, France only nine days ago. It was the Reno, Nevada native’s first World Cup podium at only his second competition.

Devin Logan and Brita Sigourney rounded out the women’s podium in second and third respectively. Sophia Schwartz took the fourth spot, while Hannah Doan finished fifth.

Cumming (Wilton, CT) also took fourth place at the World Championships and earned a World Cup bronze medal at Les Contamines, France in January.

The 2009 Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships conclude tomorrow with men’s and women’s dual moguls competitions.

"I'm really excited. It definitely wasn't easy," Wise said. "It feels good to be the top skier in America for the fourth time."

"I was in fourth place going into my second run of finals, so I knew that I really needed to send it. I did that and it worked out for me. I'm pretty excited," Wise said. "I was very excited about this event because it was a hometown competition. The last time I competed here I didn't make finals so it was nice to finally be able to get some redemption from that. "

"This is really exciting. I've had a pretty good season so far. It's really exciting to have that title under my belt," Cumming said. "The people have been so great. This is actually where I learned to ski. It is pretty exciting to come back here and compete."
