After missing the top of the podium in the first 11 World Cup competitions of the season, Norwegian nordic combined skier Magnus Moan grabbed his second win in as many days today (Jan. 17) in Chaux-Neuve, France.

“I've never won two races in the same weekend, so I am really happy,” said Moan. “In the morning, I thought that we would not jump because of the wind and rain. But then I was happy that we did because I achieved my best competition jump in this season so far.”

Once again, Moan did it on his cross country skis, 14th after the jumping portion, he sailed to the fastest cross country time and the victory for the second time in two days.

World Cup overall leader, Frenchman Jason Lamy Chappuis, jumped into second place then slipped to 15th in the cross country race to finish second overall followed by Austrian Mario Stecher in third.

The cross country race was tight as Lamy Chappuis was overtaken by Moan in the final stretch. “I realized early in the competition that Jason was skiing better and faster than the day before,” said Moan. “I caught him almost at the end, but, believe me, if the race was 50 m shorter, Jason would have won.”

American Bill Demong led his team with a fourth-place finish. He was in ninth after the jump but turned it on in the cross country race with the second-fastest time on the way to his eighth top-ten finish of the season.

"It was a solid race, for sure, but I was pretty tired at the finish and lost the sprint to Magnus, Jason and Mario," Demong said. "But, all-in-all it felt like a very strong day and I think it's the feeling I'm looking for going into this training period right before the Olympics."

Fellow Americans Todd Lodwick (13th) and Johnny Spillane (16th) also grabbed top-20 results.

"The training program we had going into the Games and World Championships in the last four years is really good. It's for fine tuning and getting those precious few seconds, especially in the finish," Demong said of the U.S. team's training plan over the next few weeks before the Games. "I'm looking forward to doing what we normally do and trusting it because I feel really close to some really good races and I couldn't ask for more."

Canadian skiers Jason Myslicki and Wesley Savill finished 46th and 52nd, respectively.
