Nordic Combined: Lamy Chappuis claims fifth season win
France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis is dominating this season’s nordic combined World Cup. The 23-year-old’s rein continued today (Jan. 23) as he won in Schonach, Germany - his fifth World Cup victory of the season. Through 14 competitions he has landed on the podium nine times and never missed the top ten.
"This was a very important victory for me in view of the overall World Cup," said Lamy Chappuis. "I won't compete anymore before the Olympic Winter Games and it was in my intention to grab as many points as possible here in Schonach."
Today’s event saw Chappuis come out of the jumping portion in fourth place then go on to the ninth-fastest cross country time and the win. In second was the Czech Republic’s Pavel Churavy, who tied for the best jump of the day and skied to the 12th place in the cross country race. Italian Alessandro Pittin rounded out the podium in third after tying Churavy on the jump and securing 13th in the cross country race.
Canadian Jason Myslicki led all North Americans in 30th place ahead of American brothers Bryan and Taylor Fletcher in 35th and 38th, respectively. Top U.S. skiers and named Olympians, Billy Demong, Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane opted not to compete in Schonach as they continue to train for a medal push at the Vancouver Games, less than a month from now.
Lamy Chappuis now leads the overall standings by a commanding 380 points. His nearest competitor is Austrian Felix Gottwald in second ahead of Norway’s Magnus Moan on third, 427 points off the leading pace. Spillane leads the U.S. in the overall standings in seventh.
World Cup competition continues in Schonach tomorrow with a team nordic combined event.
