Who is racing in Courchevel, when, and how to watch the women’s World Cup night slalom on December 21st.

The storied history of the Courchevel World Cup continues to unfold before us, originating in 1979 when Ingemar Stenmark claimed victory in its inaugural edition. Fast forward to 2011, and the event made a triumphant return, featuring skiing legends like Mikaela Shiffrin, Marta Bassino, and the recently retired Tessa Worley. Now, in its 13th consecutive season, the World Cup adds an extra thrill with a Night Slalom scheduled for December 21.

Picture yourself on the slopes of the Emile-Allais Stadium, the December air and the floodlit course setting the stage for a spectacular evening. Last season, Courchevel hosted the women’s events of the 2023 FIS Alpine World Championships, where the talented Canadian Laurence St-Germain claimed the slalom title. Despite her World Championship success, St-Germain, who has yet to step onto a World Cup podium, unfortunately, will miss the 2023 edition with an ankle injury.

As the excitement builds for this year’s Night Slalom, keep an eye on renowned skier Mikaela Shiffrin from the Stifel US Ski Team. Shiffrin, a four-time participant in Courchevel’s World Cup Slaloms, clinched victory in December 2018 but has only graced the podium once in these events. Leading the season slalom standings, she faces stiff competition with Germany’s Lena Duerr in second place, closely trailed by Slovakian Petra Vlhova, with a mere 70 points separating the top three.

The presence of these North American contenders, including Amelia Smart at 39th, all three with NCAA backgrounds, reflects their growing influence in international ski racing.
