Who is skiing, when, and how to watch the December 17th St Moritz downhill
Friday saw Italy winning another downhill but not by the unbeatable Goggia; she was second. Instead her courageous teammate Elena Curtoni took the victory. Two Swiss women followed them in third and fourth and then the next two were USA’s Breezy Johnson and Mikaela Shiffrin. Only three nations were represented in the top seven.
Ski racing fans should expect another exciting race tomorrow. However, it can be assumed that some of the women are hoping for considerably better visibility.
There can be no doubt that if she can ski Sofia Goggia is the favorite. However, as we saw today, it is possible to beat the queen of speed.
Isabella Wright didn’t finish the course today but expects good things tomorrow.
Additionally, Breezy Johnson showed today that her progress back to the podium in moving forward. A fifth place is certainly her best result of the year. You can see her willingness to compete rising and the risk-taking increasing.
Canada’s Michele Gagnon didn’t have the day she is capable of, however, expect her to exact some redemption tomorrow.
Mikaela Shiffrin showed today that when you are the best ski racer on the planet anything is possible even if you haven’t skied the event recently
Eight women, six from the US and two from Canada, will compete in the December 17th downhill.
Notably, it is good to see Lauren Macuga score her first world cup points today in her second big show. It would be great to see her follow up with a similar outcome tomorrow.
Also, the independent USA’s Tricia Mangan had her best day at the World Cup finishing a strong tie for 17th. It should solidify her access to the rest of the season’s downhills. Canada’s Stefanie Fleckenstein is also a capable independent who is looking for the spark she needs to feel confident in the big show.
