The Austrian Ski Federation has pulled the trigger. After a season in which the Austrian men’s team did not win a World Cup downhill, an Olympic medal and just two World Cup titles, the head coach has been replaced.

Austrian Mathias Berthold has been hired away from the German women’s head coaching position to take over for Toni Giger, an 11-year veteran at the helm.

Berthold raced on the World Cup in the late 1980’s and had a lucrative six season career on the American pro circuits before turning to coaching. He served the Austrians previously on the women’s side from 19998 to 2002 and has been with the German team since 2006. The German women won three gold medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The Austrian federation made the announcement Monday (March 22).
