klaus kroellThe Austrians put three skiers in among the fastest four for the first training run at Chamonix, France Wednesday (Jan. 27) under a sunny sky. World Cup skiers are training for a downhill scheduled Saturday.

Klaus Kroell was quickest down the La Verte course, narrowly ahead of teammate Georg Streitberger. Italian Christof Innerhofer, developing quite a knack for fast first training runs, was third, just a tenth off Kroell’s time. In fourth was Hannes Reichelt who moved up from the 44th start position for the finish.

The top 12 racers on the day were all within a second of Kroell indicating a close race might be in store for Saturday.

Team rookie Travis Ganong was the first American on the finish list in 26th as the U.S. squad looks to rebound from a series of injuries sustained by the speed skiers. Bode Miller elected to skip Chamonix in order to prepare for the World Championships in Garmisch, Germany beginning Feb. 8 with super G.

Steven Nyman finished 39th, Erik Fisher 42nd, Wiley Maple 55th, Tim Jitloff 57th and Will Brandenburg 62nd.

Austrian Mario Scheiber was airlifted off the course after a crash. Austrian team physician Dr Martin Gruber said Scheiber was unconscious for several minutes after the crash, broke his collarbone and nose sustaining a nasal sinus fracture. “The good news is that no bleeding in the brain occured. The spine, skull bones, arms and legs are fine. He is alert and his condition is stable.”

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
