Brandenburg, Gregorak lead US in Coronet Peak slalom

By Published On: August 17th, 2011Comments Off on Brandenburg, Gregorak lead US in Coronet Peak slalom

The U.S. men’s team got to throw a little racing into the training mix Wednesday with a Coronet Peak slalom as the big storm in New Zealand began to wear down.

Norway’s Lars Elton Myhre got the win with Canadian David Donaldson and Will Brandenburg of the U.S. tied for second a tenth and a half off the pace. Will Gregorak was fourth, Tim Kelley sixth and Seppi Stiegler 11th.

Coach Mike Day reported the “race crew at Coronet did a great job piling off 70cm or so of snow,” to get the race in after a three say snowstorm caused difficulties across the island.

“We’ve had a tremendously successful camp,” said Day. “We had a really great stretch of weather  successful camp, a really great stretch of weather before the front end of this storm. A really good training block.”

Day said the team was completely focused on continuing its training schedule, and was working on “our fundamental progression from Spring into Summer. We’re slowly building up to Soelden (opening World Cup race in September) and we still have quite a bit of preparation period coming up.” The races, he said “are a training opportunity more than anything.”

Day added that although the result for Brandenburg was strong, especially considering his return from injury, “I don’t think it was that successful in his opinion.”

In an accompanying women’s race, with far less U.S. presence, Norway’s Lotte Smiseth Sejersted took the win by a little more than a tenth over Germany’s Susanne Riesch in second and Lena Duerr in third.  Canadian Kate Ryley was fifth. Salt Lake City’s Avril Dunleavy was the top U.S. finisher in eighth.

Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition.
