The Quebec racer got a small handful of starts in the big league, but spent the bulk of his season working his way to second on the Nor-Am standings. At the Canadian National Championships, close to home at Le Massif Thursday, he reaped a bit of vengeance, claiming the downhill title for the second time. He last won it in 2006.

“The this that I am happy about is I was really struggling all year with my downhill,” Frisch said. My giant slalom skiing got a lot better as I have trained GS a lot, … and I think that is helping me now in the downhill.”

The victory is only slightly tainted by the lack of World Cup team skiers in the event. Frisch was followed to the finish by Kelby Halbert in second and Louis-Pierre Helie in third.

Frisch has had success in National title races before. In addition to his downhill crown from 2006 he also won the 2007 super G title and was second in super G in ’06.

Halbert, a member of this season’s World Junior Championship team, had an excellent run to take second with Nor-Am overall champ Helie in third. “I’m happy that I am top three, but I wanted to win,” said Helie adding that the track melted in the warm sun before he started in bib nine. Frisch started sixth and Halbert was the first skier out of the starthouse.

The women race Friday but held a training run/junior title race. Larisa Yurkiw was the fastest finisher ahead of Emilie Desforges and Shona Rubens. Yurkiw said she wasn’t satisfied with her run.

“There are parts that I didn’t fix which I had hoped to,” she said, also praising the Le Massif course. “The pitch is really intimidating,” she said. “I can’t think of another course this year that was set so straight down such a steep pitch. A lot can be learned for doing a course like this and being comfortable on it.”

Ashley-Kate Durham got the national junior title placing fourth overall and first among juniors.
