Cochran-Siegle takes DH gold at Junior Worlds

By Published On: March 2nd, 2012Comments Off on Cochran-Siegle takes DH gold at Junior Worlds

Ryan Cochran-SiegleRyan Cochran-Siegle joined Julia Mancuso, Adam Cole and Chris Beckmann today (March 2) as the only American World Junior downhill gold medalists.

Cochran-Siegle took the first bib out of the start of the men’s championship downhill at Roccaraso, Italy in the event’s first men’s race and put down a time no one else was going to reach. A pair of Swiss came closest, Ralph Weber won silver nine hundredths back and Nils Mani the bronze another four tenths behind.

Bryce Bennett gave the US team two in the top 10 finishing tenth from the 15th start.

“The earlier you started today was definitely better,” Cochran-Siegle said.

He said some problems in the final training run had taught him to stay high on the line and offered a little incentive as well. “Yesterday I had a little trouble with the first jump and I really wanted to make sure I skied that a lot better. … and I did. And I executed a lot better at the bottom.”

Other US finishers included Scott Snow in 30th, Tanner Farrow 33rd and Keiffer Christianson in 37th. Robert Cone did not start.

It was a harsh day for the Canadians as all four starters failed to finish.

The NorAm leader in both downhill and super G this season and a score producing World Cup racer in super G’s at Beaver Creek and Crans Montana, Cochran-Siegle is the son of 1972 Olympic gold medalist Barbara Ann Cochran. She wore bib one in that race as well.

“It’s nice to add this title onto the (Cochran) collection,” Cochran-Siegle said. “I don’t think today could have gone a lot better.”

Speed coach Peter Korfiatis said his instructions to Cochran-Siegle were pretty simple.

“It’s a pretty steep pitch right off the get-go for four or five turns and goes into a jump with about a 35-40m flight and then it comes down into a compression and a short little flat into jump two, which, depending on how well you execute that corner above is about a 25 or 30m flight as well. And then flat, bump turn and then it kind of meanders and swings through some little waves and a left foot into the finish. It’s relative short but tough and there’s quite a bit going on. Want to know what I said? ‘Kick out of the start and win, Bro’.”

The plan was executed.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
