NAKISKA, Canada — Canadian Dustin Cook finished second in Tuesday’s Audi Coupe NorAm Cup Finals giant slalom at the Nakiska Ski Area in Alberta to clinch the giant slalom title and a World Cup spot for next season.

The 25-year-old from Lac-Sainte-Marie, Quebec, secured his sixth NorAm podium this season and the 22nd of his career to give himself an unassailable lead in the discipline standings with only one race left to go. The Canadian Alpine Ski Team racer also leads a very tight race for the overall title as the NorAm season enters its final week.

Cook – who has three top-30 World Cup results to his name – leads the overall NorAm standings with 735 points, just ahead of the U.S. Ski Team’s Ryan Cochran-Siegle (719), who won Tuesday’s giant slalom race. Calgary’s Tyler Werry rounded out the GS podium in third.

“I’m just happy to have clinched the title. Now I can focus on training and trying to ski fast,” said Cook on securing a World Cup spot for next season. “Coming back from Europe only a couple of days ago, it was tough to figure out the snow but I skied okay. The overall title is still the goal. Now I’m in this position I’m going to have to go for it.”

Meanwhile, Canada Olympic Park hosted a very challenging Audi Coupe NorAm Cup Finals ladies’ slalom on what is a world-class race hill.

Numerous racers did not finish their runs, but American Resi Stiegler was first, her compatriot Lila Lapanja second, and Canadian development team racer Roni Remme third. Remme claimed her first NorAm slalom podium and just the second NorAm top-three result of her career, and she was also the top junior of the day.

“I feel like I’ve been close so many times. What I’m really looking for is No. 1,” Remme said of her podium. “First run was a bit of a struggle. I kind of lost focus and never really found the rhythm. Second run was a lot better. I knew what I needed to do.”

Norway’s Chloe Margrethe Fausa leads the NorAm Cup giant slalom standings with 274 points, while Canadian development team racer Candace Crawford, of Toronto – one of many to go out during Tuesday’s first run – sits second with 234 points. Madison Irwin, a member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, leads the overall NorAm Cup standings with 749 points, while Julia Roth is second with 632.

The action continues Wednesday with a second men’s giant slalom at Nakiska and a second ladies’ slalom at Canada Olympic Park (9 a.m.). At the conclusion of the finals, the top two ranked North American racers in each discipline earn a World Cup spot for next year, while the winner of the overall gets a World Cup spot in each discipline for next season.
