One of the U.S. Ski Team’s top speed racers of her era, Edith Thys Morgan, has been named as a trustee to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation.

Morgan, now a noted author on her sport and mother to aspiring young ski racing children, was announced by U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) President and CEO Bill Marolt.

A Squaw Valley native, Morgan was ranked in the top 10 in the world in downhill and super G, competed in two Olympics (1988, ’92) and three FIS World Championships (1987, ’89, ’91). She spent nine years as a leader on the U.S. Ski Team, retiring in 1993.

As an athlete, Thys gained popularity for telling the behind the scenes stories of athletes with her noteworthy Racer eX column in Ski Racing Magazine and later SKI. She joined the staff of SKI in 1995 as a senior editor in New York, later moving with the magazine to Boulder. Her work has also appeared in SI for Women, Brides, Diversions, Outside for Women and other magazines. She has also provided commentary on the sport for NBC, CNN SI, Today Show and others.

“Athlete input on our board is vital to integrating our cause into our base of passionate trustees,” said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. “Edie was a strong U.S. Ski Team athlete who has stayed in direct contact with our sport and will provide our board with great insight.”

“I’m looking forward to being part of the USSA in a different capacity now, as a parent and a coach,” said Morgan. “It definitely gives me the current grassroots perspective to go along with my experiences at the elite level. I am extremely invested in ski racing both as a competitive pursuit and as a way of raising strong, confident, capable kids that can succeed well beyond sport.”

Morgan grew up in the famed Squaw Valley racing program. After her U.S. Ski Team career she married fellow racer Chan Morgan. Today they live in Etna, NH, raising two boys. Both Edie and Chan have remained active in the sport as coaches in the Ford Sayre club program. -GM
