Week 16 recap
Four teams (Rick’s Rangers, Team PMS, Interosseous Membrane and the Weekend Warriors) powered over the 300-point barrier despite the limitations of a four-race weekend in a single discipline. Both the Rangers with 330 and the Warriors with 369 topped their seasonal best scores. The closest matchup was a 10-point differencial with Hawk’s Harem edging the hapless Destroyers 81-71 with all of the scoring from Tanja Poutiainen, who was fifth and seventh in the Levi, Finland, slaloms. The Destroyers’ points all came from Ted Ligety with a fifth and a 10th in Japan to hand the week over.

The biggest margin of victory was an astounding 309-point trouncing as the Weekend Warriors — now possessing the longest win streak in the league — humbled the cross-office rival Schwarzeneggers. With Anja Paerson in the slalom position fighting for her honor and brining in 180 points with the effort, the Warriors also hit Kalle Palander for his slalom win and got one race worth of podium from Kathrin Zettel. Zettel alone matched the Schwarzenegger total coming from Nicole Hosp in the slalom position and her single podium.

The Birds of Pray used the free-agent wire early in the week to load up on slalom specialists and the strategy nearly worked but for the stinging power the league has suffered through all season from Team PMS. The Birds added Ligety and Giorgio Rocca in overall positions, but didn’t get the podiums from them which might have been anticipated. Ligety tossed in 71 points and Rocca added 47, but the main force was Kalle Palander in the slalom position with 129 for a 247 total. Against some teams that would be enough, but Team PMS had Janica Kostelic and Nicole Hosp in the overall positions and Zettel in the slalom hole for nothing but podiums and an even 300-point total.

In the battle for second, Interosseous Membrane and the Blacks locked up with the Blacks no doubt pleased to have Kostelic in the slalom position, but getting just 50 points from Marlies Schild in an overall slot for its total. The Membrane countered Kostelic with Benjamin Raich in an overall position and got solid two race results from both Aksel Svindal and Poutiainen to take the week.

The Hammers got the best weekend of slalom racing ever from Lindsey Kildow, which was good for 90 and 50 from Schild in the slalom position but ran into the Rangers’ best week period. Having both Anja Paerson and World Cup overall winner Benjamin Raich on the roster was all the Rangers needed, with Paerson posting 180 from the overall one position and Raich another 150 from the slalom spot.

The Smokin’ Mirrors, heavily laden with speed skiers, picked up Olympic silver medalist Reinfried Herbst in an overall position and got a share of the Shigakogen win from him. Giorgio Rocca chipped in a handful of slalom points and the Mirrors walked away from the sinking Ribbons that had only Rainer Schoenfelder in any position to score at all. He contributed 32 points, but hardly enough to challenge anyone.
