Fjaellstroem claims opening gold of 2013 Jr Worlds

Quebec has hosted the World Junior Championships three times now, in 2000, 2006 and this year, which sets up some interesting parallels.

Swedish racer Magdalena Fjaellstroem charged up the finish order from sixth after run one to win the first gold medal of the 2013 event in the slalom, bumped up the schedule by weather. Thirteen years ago it was also a Swede, and neighbor, who won the slalom here, the now retired Anja Paerson.

“Wow,” Fjaellstroem said. “I didn’t know she won in Quebec. We are from the same village and I know her very well. It’s nice to know.”

The silver went to Swiss Michele Gisin and first run co-leader Adeline Baud collected the bronze for France.

Gisin was happy as slalom was her only opportunity to medal and Baud was amazed as slalom isn’t really her strongest discipline.

“It’s like a dream. These are my first World Championships and I win a medal on the first race. It’s incredible!” Gisin said. ” I am very happy to be here in Canada. The slalom is my only discipline so it’s a 100% for me! It was very hard because you have to ski both runs very quickly. Magdalena skied very well, she has a outstanding season and I am very happy for her” said the Swiss.
Baud said “It’s definitely a huge surprise for me” she told us. “My discipline is the GS. I came here for this race. So tomorrow, I am aiming for gold.” Baud said with confidence.
Conditions included blowing snow and the surface was soft and broke down quickly. Swede Nathalie Eklund has tied Baud for the first run lead and teammates Paulina Grassl and Charlotta Saefvenberg was fourth. Eklund finished fifth, and Grassl 12th. Saefvenberg was one of 12 failing to finish the second run. The forecast for the GS was vastly improved.

Lila Lapanja was the top American skier in 15th while Jacqueline Wiles posted 24th.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
