Follis, Northug win Tour de Ski day five

The FIS Tour de Ski continued today (Jan. 6) as the eight-leg tour made its way to Cortina/ Toblach, Italy. Italian Arianna Follis and Norway’s Petter Northug took today’s victories.

Follis gave the home crowed more than enough to cheer about as she took the win on the 17 km long course from Tre Cime to Toblach with a time of 34:34.8. Slovenia’s Petra Majdic took second, 3.4 second off the pace. Poland’s Justyna Kowalcyk finished third, 4.1 seconds behind Follis.

“It was difficult to go fast under the today’s soft conditions but at the end of the day I am happy as I proved myself that I even could win in this conditions,” said Follis.

Today’s podium mirrored the overall tour standings as Follis now leads the pack, followed by Majdic in second and Kowalcyk in third. Majdic is still leading in the sprint standings, ahead of Finn Aino-Kaisa Saarinen (fourth today) in second.

“I am very happy about my second place,” said Majdic. “It went better than I anticipated. We cooperated very well with Arianna. We wanted to ski as fast as possible to catch Aino Kaisa. Arianna had more energy in the finish. I am very happy for her that she won on her home soil.”

Canadian Sara Renner finished 23rd.

On the men’s side, Northug reclaimed the tour lead with today’s victory on his birthday. He was the fastest in a three-man sprint to the finish of the 36km course. Last year’s tour winner, Switzerland’s Dario Cologna, finished second .4 seconds behind, followed by Swede Markus Hellner .8 seconds off the winning pace.

“It was a tough race. Tougher than I had expected,” said Northug.  “First 20 km was uphill. It was not steep but it was long. On the top I actually felt quite tired. The downhill afterwards was quite demanding as well as I had to work almost the time to maintain the speed.”

After today’s race the overall men’s standings also looked just like the podium with Northung on top, followed by Gologna and Hellner in second and third, respectively.

Ivan Babikov led the Canadian men in 9th place. Devon Kershaw and Alex Harvey followed in 17th and 21st, respectively.

The Tour de Ski is an eight-stage event that crosses three countries over ten days. The overall winner gets 400 World Cup points and 150,000 Swiss francs (147,000 dollars). Competition continues Thursday in Cortina, Italy with men’s and women’s 10km and 5 km races.
