The 22-year-old German technical specialist Stefan Luitz suffered a serious injury to his right thigh muscle during a slalom training crash in Pfelders, Italy, in the days just before Christmas. In the fall, Luitz’s ski cut through the middle thigh muscle in his right leg. He is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks while he recovers.

He most recently finished on the podium in the Are World Cup giant slalom race on Dec. 12, 2014 with a third-place result.

Initial treatment following the crash was carried out at the hospital in Meran, but then Luitz was flown via helicopter to the trauma center in Murnau, where a team led by Dr. Volker Buehren found no further damage.

“The injury and the associated loss annoy me greatly,” said Luitz. “On the other hand, I had – according to the doctors – a blessing in disguise. I’m going to concentrate on my rehabilitation to be able to race again as quickly as possible.”
