Herman, Woods take Grand Prix slopestyle titles at Copper

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – Keri Herman’s back-to-back switch tricks and clean landings sealed the deal for her second straight World Cup win at the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Copper Mountain Saturday.

Herman’s first run featured one of the best displays of grabs fans have seen in women’s slopestyle skiing. Canadian Dara Howell and Australia’s Anna Segal took second and third, respectively, to round out the women’s podium.

“I am so happy,” exclaimed Herman. “At Dew Tour in December I finished dead last, and this is great. It’s so cool to have won both FIS World Cup’s so far. It’s a real honor to represent the USA at the top of the podium. I tried so hard to grab well in my run and it worked out. The field of competition was tough and I am lucky the score from my first run held, because I fell on my second run. This is such a good confidence booster heading into X Games.”

Men’s event

Great Britain’s James Woods took the men’s title, dropping in last, as the first-place qualifier, to beat out Australian Russ Henshaw and Canadian Alex Beaulieu-Marchand and knock Colorado native Bobby Brown off the podium.

Woods, who won the first FIS World Cup slopestyle contest of the season in Argentina, expanded his lead in the FIS World Cup series. The win at Copper also placed him second in Association of Freeskiing Professionals’ (AFP) World Tour, behind Henshaw.

Woods’ innovative run consisted of switch tails over 450 on the rail and a 450 off the pole jam in the upper section of the course, followed by a switch right-side 900 mute tweak, double cork 1080 safety grab to Japan poke, and right-side double cork 1260 truck driver in the triple jump set.

The event doubled as the U.S. Slopestyle Championship with Brown and Herman taking titles as top Americans.

The Grand Prix is the first domestic stop for athletes to gain Olympic qualifying points and AFP Platinum level event points. The weekend will be televised on the NBC Sports Network Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. EST.
