Hirscher leads after run one with Kasper and Ligety in the hunt of Beaver Creek Slalom

HirscherThe Beaver Creek slalom first run was long and brutal, with 71 gates at the highest altitude course on the World Cup. Marcel Hirscher grabbed the first run lead just ahead of Italian Cristian DeVille who’s coach set the course, and the defending World Cup overall champion Ivica Kostelic. The two are tied .14 behind Hirscher.

Behind them sits a pair of Americans, Nolan Kasper and Ted Ligety. Outside of the team these results would be considered unexpected. Inside the team the thinking was that Will Brandenburg might have joined them near the top of the result list. Brandenburg was leading through two intervals before catching a tip and exiting the course.

Kasper’s result has to be considered a surprise, even though he won the Europa Cup slalom title last season. He had hip surgery over the summer and missed the bulk of the training season not getting back on snow until November. Add to that a virus that had him in the hospital earlier in the week.

“I could not eat for the last two days and have had no sleep, but it is a ski race,” he said, indicating it would have taken more than a mere virus to keep him from a World Cup start.

Ligety hasn’t been on a Cup slalom podium since 2008. “I made some little mistakes,” he said, “but it is fun to have a decent slalom run for a change.”

Three Canadians also made the cut for the second run, Julian Cousineau in 15th, Brad Spence 23rd and Michael Janyk 27th. Bode Miller qualified 28th.

Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
