VAL D’ISERE, France – After yesterday’s disappointment in the slalom race of Courchevel, where she straddled, Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch needed to get back on track. She clocked the fastest time of the day in training at 1:49.30, on the 2900 meter long Oreiller Killy slope, known as the OK. Austria’s Anna Fenninger took second position, just 0.17 seconds off the pace, while Carolina Ruiz Castillo took third, 0.26 seconds back.

Lindsey Vonn decided to skip the St. Moritz races to rest in order to get ready for Val d’Isère. She finished 12th today, 1.23 seconds slower than Hoefl-Riesch, with Tina Maze just ahead of her in 11th (+1.20) and Lara Gut in 13th position (+1.23), who won last year’s downhill race here in Val d’Isère.

Vonn later posted to Facebook, “Solid day at the office, finished 12th in the downhill training. Made some big mistakes but also won a few sections.”

Maria Hoefl-Riesch, who finished 13th of last year’s downhill, won the last two downhill races held in Lake Louise and currently sits 71 points clear at the top of the downhill rankings, ahead of Elena Fanchini.

“The last races were difficult for me, especially yesterday”, said the 29-year-old German. “I was really fast before I unfortunately skied out. I also struggled in the last two super g races in Lake Louise and St. Moritz. In downhill for now it’s looking good. My skis must be super fast, because I didn’t ski perfectly today and still managed to be the fastest. I hope I can have a good race on Saturday and make up some points.”

Snow is expected tomorrow but the forecast is still uncertain about the amount of snowfall.

“I hope it isn’t going to snow too much. The slope is already a bit soft and a bit bumpy in some sections. New snow might not be ideal”, Hoefl-Riesch concluded.

The speed ladies will get a second chance to train tomorrow if the weather allows.
