Innerhofer fastest in Bormio with Bode right behind

Bode Miller in Bormio training (GEPA/Daniel Goetzhaber)

The fastest three in Bormio, Italy for the first downhill training run Friday (Dec. 27) have been known to turn some heads. Italian Christof Innerhofer was quickest down the slope at the event organizers bill as “Pure Adrenalin.”

Second fastest was American Bode Miller and third was Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal.

It was a good day for the hosting Italians. Aside from Innerhofer in the top spot, the Azzura also had Peter Fill and Silvano Varettoni tied for fourth and Werner Heel in a tie for ninth.

“It’s always good to be back in Bormio, my first big successes, my first victory and my first podium after that happened on this slope so I have great memories from the ‘Stelvio’. I am having fun this week as I know I can do really well,” said Innerhofer.

“The conditions are as if there were two races in one,” he continued. “On the top section, it’s wintery conditions while on the bottom it’s more like spring. It’s not so fun on top as it’s quite soft and it’s hard to get out of the turns while in the last section it was really fun. It’s always a good feeling proving that I can be among the fastest, even if this is just a training.”

It wasn’t so bad for the U.S. skiers, either, with four in the top 20 including Steven Nyman (tied with Heel) in ninth, Travis Ganong in 17th and Marco Sullivan 19th.

Canada had Erik Guay in sixth.

Fresh snowfall and mixed precipitation in the days leading up to the event made for variable conditions from the top of the track to the bottom. Ganong remarked on social media, “Every classification of snow type is well represented this year!” before noting bottomless pow, death cookies, breakable crust, and ice as just some of the conditions he encountered.
