Whistler native Britt Janyk cruised to the giant slalom title Friday on her home hill at the Canadian Championships, winning by more than two seconds over fellow national team member Shona Rubens.
WHISTLER NATIVE Britt Janyk cruised to the giant slalom title Friday on her home hill at the Canadian Championships, winning by more than two seconds over fellow national team member Shona Rubens.
    Janyk posted a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 27.05 seconds to capture her fourth Canadian GS title in the past six years.
    “It feels really good to win the GS because I haven’t for a few years,” said Janyk, whose last Canadian Championships GS win came in 2004. Janyk has won national titles in all five of the alpine ski racing disciplines.
    Rubens finished in 2:29.23 for her second medal of the championships. She won the national slalom title earlier in the week. Marie-Michele Gagnon finished third in 2:30.39.
    The top American in the race was Ski Club Vail standout Erika Ghent in eighth (2:32.62).  
    In the Canadian nationals men’s slalom earlier this week, Paul Stutz took the gold, edging out the retiring Thomas Grandi. Stutz clocked a two-run effort of 1:25.23, while Grandi finished in 1:25.65. Warner Nickerson finished third in 1:25.68, fellow American Paul McDonald was fourth and John Kucera fifth.
