Julia Mancuso, Dustin Cook take U.S. super G titles

By Published On: March 30th, 2012Comments Off on Julia Mancuso, Dustin Cook take U.S. super G titles

American Julia Mancuso and Canadian Dustin Cook claimed super G titles today (March 30) at the U.S. National Championships in sunny, warm Winter Park, Colo.

Mancuso, who is coming off of her best World Cup season in years, kept her speed up today in the Rocky Mountain slush.

“It’s fun coming to nationals and it’s fun to win races,” said Mancuso. “Racing World Cup all the time, you don’t get to win that many races so it’s actually still a special feeling and I’m happy.”

Mancuso, who racked up three World Cup podiums including two wins this season on her way to finishing the season ranked fourth overall, took today’s race in with a 1.2-second winning margin ahead of Leanne Smith in second place.

“Its always fun to ski race in this, to see all the enthusiasm from the ski clubs across America and watch everyone and cheer for them, it’s a good atmosphere,” said Mancuso. “I think its fun, I definitely remember racing with the older veterans on the U.S. Ski Team and the girls racing World Cup, I hope the younger girls appreciate it. I know my teammates like that I come of course, I have to come to keep them in line.”

A freshly trimmed Laurenne Ross (she cut off the dreadlocks she wore for six years last night) finished third another 0.17 seconds behind Smith. Ross also led the winning team in the Nastar team ProAm earlier this week.

“Today was pretty good, it didn’t freeze last night, it’s really slushy and kind of bally it was really soft like trenches but it was pretty fun still. You know, you gotta love super G, it doesn’t matter what conditions are,” said Ross, who enjoyed the sunshine with her new short hair cut. “It feels really good. I have kind of been planning on it all winter, I was going to wait till it got warm but it’s pretty warm here. I have had dreads for six years so I’m moving on.”

The win marked Mancuso’s fourth career super G title and a U.S. record 14th discipline title. She donned some new foot gear for the occasion. The Tahoe, Calif. native, who has raced in Lange boots since 2005, took to the slushy course today in a pair of Head boots clicked into her regular Volkl skis. Mancuso would not comment on whether she had settled on an agreement with Head moving forward or not.

Anna Marno (Steamboat Springs, CO) earned top junior honors in seventh overall ahead of Abby Ghent (Edwards, CO/Ski and Snowboard Club Vail) with the junior silver medal in ninth overall and Vanessa Berther (Sammamish, WA/Alaska University Anchorage Ski Team) with the junior bronze in 12th overall.

“The year has been a little up and down but it was great to come back to Winter Park and I have had a lot of races here throughout the years growing up over in Steamboat so Winter Park is like a second home to me and it’s good to throw one down here,” said Marno. “Nationals tops off the year, you have everyone here and Winter Park does a great job putting it on and my family gets to come.”

In the men’s ultra tight race, Canadian Dustin Cook took the win by just four-hundredths of a second ahead of yesterdya’s slalom winner, American Tommy Ford. Fellow Americans Brennan Rubie and Jared Goldberg were only two hundredths of a second behind Ford to tie for twin bronze medals.

“I’m pumped to be here, [Tommy Ford} skis really well in these conditions,” said Cook. “I haven’t won a Canadian title yet but this will be my second U.S. title. I really like Colorado, the rest of the Canadian guys are racing in Panorama but I wanted to do more speed, they’re doing more tech so I came out here to score some points and it looks like it worked out so far.”

Canadian skiers took four of six medals in men’s speed U.S. national title events this season. Louis-Pierre Helie led an all-Canadian sweep of the men’s downhill podium at Aspen in February. Cook also took the silver medal in the U.S. National downhill in February.

Ryan Cochran-Siegle, who won two gold medals at the Junior World Championships earlier this month, took the gold medal in the juniors category just missing the overall podium in fifth. Bryce Bennett (eighth overall)  took the juniors silver medal ahead of Kieffer Christianson (5th oerall) with the junior silver medal.

“My season’s been good, I’m very happy,” said Cochran-Siegle. “The snow is peely they did a good job at making it smooth which is impressive. It’s a nice way to end it for sure. I’m glad that I was able to get some World Cup points, world juniors was awesome.”

The U.S. combined titles (super G and slalom) were also decided with today’s results. Kiley Staples took the women’s win ahead of Lili Lapanja in second and Foreste Peterson in third. Ford took the men’s combined title for the third consecutive year. Michael Ankeny finished second ahead of Will Brandenburg in third. Both winners pocketed $2,500 in prize money.

The 2012 U.S. National Championships continue Saturday with the women’s giant slalom.
