Junior Olympics: Nordic competition kicks off in Anchorage

The Tyson 2009 Junior Olympics got under way in Anchorage, Alaska yesterday with men’s and women’s nordic combined and special jumping events.

The men’s nordic combined was taken by the Intermountain Division’s (IMD) Tyler Smith. Erik Lynch of the Rocky Mountain Division claimed second, while IMD skier Hyrum Bailey finished third.

Nina Lussi of the East Division took the women’s victory, followed by Kamber Kissell of the IMD in second and Rocky Mountain skier Mary O’Connell in third.

The men’s special jumping contest saw Central skier Christian Friberg claim the gold, followed by IMD skiers Bailey and Will Rhoads in second and third, respectively.

Sarah Hendrickson of the IMD won the women’s special jumping event, followed by Lussi in second and Kissell in third.

Competition in Anchorage continues today with more nordic combined and jumping  competition.
