Kroell leads training at choppy Garmisch

It was Hannes Reichelt with the fastest time down the World Championship downhill trail at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in the opening training run today (Jan 26), but that had more to do with taking a shortcut and skipping gates. Klaus Kroell was the fastest to make all the proper turns down a track that was hard in some spots and soft in others.

Under clear sky and with colder temperatures than the tour has seen in weeks the track was a bit of a rugged test. US coach Sasha Rearick described the Kandahar 2 trail in one word increments: “Tough. … Bumpy. … Choppy.” Asked if the surface was hard or soft, his response was “All.”

Erik Guay claimed the world downhill championship on the same hill a less than a year ago and was seventh in the training run.

“They did a great job of preparation,” he said, “but it’s bumpy toward the bottom where your legs are tired. I expect it will get firm and hard if the weather stays the same and be a Bormio-like course.”

Next best Canadian was Jan Hudec, coming off his best finish of the season at Kitzbuehel was next fastest Canadian in 36th.

Bode Miller was the fastest Americans with the 19th ranked run of the day. Erik Fisher was 30th, Travis Ganong 40th, Marco Sullivan 43rd and Wiley Maple 48th.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
