McPhie, Cota take U.S. National Moguls titles
Moguls skiers Heather McPhie and Jeremy Cota took U.S. national titles today (March 23) as competition got underway in Stratton, Vermont.
McPhie of Bozeman, Mont. earned her first national title after beating this season’s freestyle overall World Cup champion Hannah Kearney, who finished second. FIS women’s moguls rookie of the year KC Oakley finished third.
“Being U.S. Champion has definitely been on my bucket list for a while,” said McPhie. “I’ve been really happy with my season. I’ve thrown my D-spin every single event, which was my goal and to stay on the forefront of innovation. I was really excited to stick to my plan and commit to it.”
On the men’s side, Cota, who claimed his first singles national title after finishing second the last two years, took the win over Patrick Deneen in second place. Reed Snyderman finished third for his first National Championships medal.
“Actually I wasn’t super happy with my first two runs today so to put down my best run in the final was great,” said Cota. “This is my first singles national championship title which is a title that’s eluded me for a while so this feels really good.”
National Champhioships competition will continue in Stratton Saturday with the men’s and women’s aerials competitions and the moguls skiers will close the show Sunday with duals contests. The halfpipe contests schedule for Thursday were canceled.
