Megan Gerety announces retirement from U.S. Ski Team{mosimage}USSA — Two-time Olympian Megan Gerety of Anchorage, Alaska, sidelined for two years with chronic knee injuries, has decided to retire after 13 seasons with the U.S. Ski Team, U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt said on May 6.

Gerety, 31, arrived on the World Cup racing scene with a splash in March 1991, finishing fifth in her first race, a downhill at Vail, Colo. She went on to make the 1992 and ’94 Olympic squads but injuries kept her off the 1998 and 2002 teams. She competed in five World Championships and won two U.S. downhill titles.

“It’s strange — I get joked on the World Cup that I was fifth in my first race and never did any better, except for that fourth (in downhill at the 2001 World Championships) in St. Anton,” she said. “I’d like to race but I just can’t, so it’s time to move on. I’ve got some other things I want to do.”

Gerety said she and longtime boyfriend Tommy Moe plan to be married in September at Alyeska Resort in Alaska, where she started her racing career, and she has spent much of the last two years taking community college classes in elementary education, possibly leading to a degree in physical education. She also coached part-time with the Jackson Hole, Wyo., Ski Club.

“We all are pretty aware of what Megan’s been living with for the last few years, and it’s been frustrating — for her, for her coaches and teammates — that she hasn’t been able to race,” Hunt said. “She’s had outstanding results and been a strong, supportive team member for more than a decade. We’re sorry to see her retire and we wish her the best of luck.”
