Men test downhill track for Worlds; Reichelt first; Guay fourth

The first, and last full length, official running of the men’s downhill track with the set for the World Championships was contested this morning (Feb 7) with Hannes Reichelt edging a pair of Italians, Dominik Paris and Christof Innerhofer, to put his name at the top of the finish order.

Defending world champion, Canadian Erik Guay was fourth.

Guay said he isn’t feeling any pressure yet, but expected to be nervous before the downhill start. He noted, however, there would be plenty of other skiers feeling as much pressure as he.

“This is (Klaus) Kroell’s  home town and he won here last year. (Aksel Lund) Svindal is another and also (Dominik) Paris. He won at Kitzbuehel and is now in the red bib (signifying leading the standings). I’m certainly not going to be the only one feeling the pressure here this week.”

Steven Nyman led the attack for the US, finishing in14th despite having his skis sliding sideways more than once on his tour of the course. He noted the US team had trained with the Austrians on the hill at the Christmas break. “This is basically the same course set we trained on,” one big difference being, “now, the bottleneck is really icy.”

It was the first time down the track for 29th finishing Marco Sullivan who missed racing here at the end of last season. “It’s fun, with a lot of terrain. The first run, it’s a little exciting.” It was also tiring he said, “The legs were dead.”

Ryan Cochran-Siegle posted the 32nd fastest time. He said his skiing in the super G had been “some of the best I’ve had all season. It’s cool to do it in a big event like this and not some FIS race.” His skiing in the downhill training run was similar he said. “I just have to fix somethings and I think I can do that by Monday (for men’s combination).”

Weibrecht finished 34th and said he “just got a little lost at the bottom” after good split times. Travis Ganong, the 42nd finisher, knew at least one thing he was going to change. “I used a brand new pair of boots today. Bad decision.”

The men will not get another chance at a full length training. Tomorrow’s scheduled training run will not include the final pitch into the stadium.
