National downhill titles awarded to Wiles and Goldberg

The U.S national downhill championship was settled at Copper Mountain today with Jacqueline Wiles and Jared Goldberg skiing away with the titles, while Americans claimed every spot on the podium for both genders.

Wiles, who finished with a time of 1 minute, 44.91 seconds, shared the podium with Katie Ryan (+0.12) and Anna Marno (+0.61), who posted a couple NorAm wins at the venue earlier in the month.

On the men’s side, the silver medal went to Bryce Bennett, who finished a mere hundredth of a second behind the winner Goldberg. Thomas Biesemeyer took home the bronze. He was .43 seconds back.

The race was held on the venue recently vacated by the some of the best racers in the world, who utilized it for their fall training, including members of the A Team, currently competing in Europe.

For Goldberg, this year has meant his first World Cup start, first World Cup points and now a national championship in the downhill. He credited, in part, the incredible training in Chile and Copper Mountain over the summer for his recent success.

“[Copper Mountain] is the only place we can train a minute-40 downhill this time of year, and I think that was really beneficial for our team,” said Goldberg, who also competed in Beaver Creek and Lake Louise. While he started last in Alberta, he said it was a great experience to know he reached the top level.

It was his second win in a row at the Copper venue.

“Being on this hill so much, and being able to train with guys like Svindal and Marco Sullivan really helped me out. Being that close to those guys on this hill and having that confidence, and being that guy within couple tenths of those guys, I knew I could be fast in this race,” said Goldberg.

Goldberg did some boot-tweaking in Lake Louise. He says he’s much more comfortable with his setup and is looking forward to going into the rest of the season with even more confidence.

For Wiles, who won the women’s championship, it’s a crazy feeling to know she’s the national champion, she said.

“It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Wiles after the win. “I can’t believe it happened. I’m super stoked.” Wiles also said the recent training block at Copper was helpful in her preparation for the national championship.

Wiles said the pitches suit her style better than Copper’s flatter
portions, but she was able to stay close on the top (flatter) and sneak
in toward the bottom (steeper).

“Copper is an amazing hill. I was lucky to have been able to train there,” said Wiles. “I knew the hill pretty well going into the races. The training runs went pretty well. I had a couple mistakes, but I just focused on those for race day and I think it worked out.”
