BIG SKY, Montana — Defending national champion Colorado began its title defense in style Sunday in the season-opening NCAA slalom at the Montana State Invitational. Lucie Zikova won the women’s race and freshmen Drew Roberts and Stefan Hughes finished 1-2 in the men’s race.
BIG SKY, Montana — Defending national champion Colorado began its title defense in style Sunday in the season-opening NCAA slalom at the Montana State Invitational. Lucie Zikova won the women’s race and freshmen Drew Roberts and Stefan Hughes finished 1-2 in the men’s race.
    Zikova, the defending NCAA slalom champion, topped the field with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 29.15 seconds. Stefanie Klocker of Alaska-Anchorage finished second at 1:29.58, and Claire Abbe of the University of Denver was third in 1:30.45. Nevada’s Katie Lyons (1:30.78) and New Mexico’s Karin Ohlin (1:31.49) completed the top five.
    Roberts won the first race of his college career in 1:26.77, nipping Hughes, who finished in 1:26.84. DU’s Sean Higgins completed the podium in third place with a time of 1:27.05. Rounding out the top five were New Mexico teammates Tor Fodnesbergene (1:27.77) and Alex Mach (1:27.93).
    Saturday’s scheduled giant slalom races were canceled due to poor weather.
