MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Dartmouth, looking to complete a perfect 6-0 regular season, moved within four races of doing just that Friday, taking a sizeable lead at the Middlebury College Winter Carnival after the first day of racing.
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Dartmouth, looking to complete a perfect 6-0 regular season, moved within four races of doing just that Friday, taking a sizeable lead at the Middlebury College Winter Carnival after the first day of racing.  
    The Big Green leads the field with 464.5 points after two Nordic and two alpine races. Vermont sits in second place with 431 points, while Middlebury College is in third with 420.
    At the Rikert Touring Center, the Dartmouth cross-country team extended its undefeated season by placing first in both the men's and women's races. The men swept first through third in the 10- kilometer freestyle, with junior Ben True winning with a time of 24 minutes, 38.1 seconds. Sophomore Glenn Randall followed in second with a time of 25:01.5, and senior captain Mike Sinott finished in third in 25:08.0. Sylvan Ellefson of Bates was fourth and Dartmouth’s Ben Koons was fifth.
    The Dartmouth women finished 1-2 in the 5 km freestyle. Senior captain Sara Studebaker won with a time of 13:52.6.  Junior Elsa Sargent took second place, just four seconds behind in 13:56.4. Vermont skiers Katrina Howe (14:06.5) and Carina Hamel (14:12.5) followed in third and fourth, and Middlebury’s Cassidy Edwards finished fifth.
    The Dartmouth alpine teams both finished second in Friday’s slalom at Snow Bowl. Lindsay Mann won the women’s race, completing a two-run time of 1:46.88. Vermont’s Kara Crow finished second, and Dartmouth junior Michelanne Shields was third with a time of 1:48.30.
    Dartmouth senior David Chodounsky took second place in the men’s race with a time of 1:33.18, finishing behind winner Greg Hardy of Vermont. Senior Evan Weiss placed fifth in 1:34.01.
    Action continues Saturday with the women's 15 km classic and men's 20 km classic races. The alpine teams will finish Saturday with the giant slalom.
