Cross-country wins by first-year Ida Sargent and junior Dakota Blackhorse-Von Jess helped defending NCAA champion Dartmouth take an early lead after the first day of the Bates College Carnival.
CROSS-COUNTRY wins by first-year Ida Sargent and junior Dakota Blackhorse-Von Jess helped defending NCAA champion Dartmouth take an early lead after the first day of the Bates College Carnival.
    Mixed rain and sleet didn’t slow the Dartmouth women, who took three of the top four spots in the 5 km freestyle. The Big Green currently lead the women’s standings with 94 points. Middlebury’s Alexa Turzian was second Friday, ahead of Dartmouth’s Hannah Dreissigacker in third.
    Middlebury’s Tim Reynolds finished second in the men’s 10 km race, with Colby’s Wyatt Fereday third. Colby placed three men in the top 10 to score 89 points to lead Dartmouth by seven points in the standings.
    Dartmouth leads overall with 176 points. Middlebury is second with 150, and New Hampshire is third with 133. The season-opening alpine events at Sunday River originally scxheuled for Friday and Saturday were postponed to Saturday and Sunday due to weather. Nordic racing continues Saturday with the men and women’s classical events.
