The United States’ Bill Marolt will continue as a vice president of the FIS.
Schroecksnadel, who claimed that he wanted to be the leader of the Schladming organizing committee, surprised the delegates here when he announced his decision not to seek re-election. His departure may have been hastened by the federation’s difficulties with doping violations at the Torino Winter Olympic Games as the Austrian Olympic movement asked for and received his resignation from their Olympic committee.
He was replaced by Wörndle, a longtime fixture in Austrian alpine skiing. Formerly the head coach of the Stams Academy, Wörndle was the head coach of the Austrian ski team from 1987 to 1996. Most recently he has run the national ski instructors academy in St. Christof am Arlberg.
Four other candidates were not elected to the council. Verdran Pavlek from Croatia failed by eight votes. Also failing to gain enough votes were: David Howden of New Zealand, Ivo Menev of Bulgaria and Toomas Savi of Estonia. — G.B. Jr.
