Nolan Kasper claims Europa Cup slalom podium

American ski racing fans don’t hear a lot about the Europa Cup for good reason. It’s a tough league – some say tougher than World Cup – and we have rarely had much to talk about. Not so much this season.

On the heels of an amazing performance in slalom at Obereggen, Italy from Will Gregorak and David Chodounsky the squad moved to Pozza di Fassa and two more American men sparkled with Nolan Kasper claiming second and Will Brandenburg fifth in a slalom won by Jens Byggmark of Sweden.

Team coach Ben Black said conditions could not have been more opposite then the injected rock hard surface of Obereggen. “Here was drier snow and super aggressive grippy snow and that played a large part in it.”

He said good efforts from the duo got them perfect start positions in the second heat. “Start position for second run was critical and those guys started six and eight. You could see in the first run that after 40 or 50 came down it was just trashed,” Black said.

“Nolan just absolutely sparked it. He skied out of his mind,” the coach said. The two Americans held positions one and two up until the last six skiers – the fastest of the first run – came down. “Byggmark got ahead of Nolan and then (Wolfgang) Hoerl and (Giuliano) Razzoli got by Will. … Nolan’s second run was unbelievable.”

The result was a huge confidence booster for both U.S. athletes. They’ll earn better start position and got a little cash for the finishes. -hm

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
