Nordic Combined: Watabe Wins, Fletcher leads U.S. in Liberec

Japan’s Akito Watabe  took the win at today’s (Feb. 26) World Cup Nordic Combined in Liberec, Czech Republic in front of  France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis. In the overall standing, Chappuis leads, 183 points ahead of Watabe. Austrian Mario Stecher placed third.

“I’m very tired today. It was a difficult competition with the changing conditions at the Ski Jumping and a very deep and soft track.” Said Watabe, “It will be difficult to catch Jason Lamy Chappuis.”

American Bryan Fletcher scored a career best World Cup result, finishing fourth. At the midway mark, Fletcher stood in sixth with a 40 second deficit, and managed to ski strong to land one off the podium. Teammate Billy Demong broke into the top ten, finishing eighth.

“Bryan is getting closer and closer to the podium. It will come. He did a good job today but wasn’t quite as strong as Jason and Mario.” Said head coach Dave Jarrett

The men’s World Cup Nordic Combined will go on with an Individual Gundersen competition and a Team Sprint in Lahti next weekend.
