Nyman, Sullivan, Bahrke featured in Universal, Champion motivational videos

Universal sports and Champion Athletic Apparel have partnered to give Winter Olympic fans a look inside what drives six U.S. Winter athletes. The video series titled “What’s you Everest?” will uncover what makes the country’s top winter athletes work so hard.

Alpine racers Marco Sullivan and Steven Nyman and moguls skier Shannon Bahrke will be featured in their own motivational video vignettes along with bobsledder Bill Schuffenhauer, luger Ruben Gonzalez and freeskier Tyson Bolduc.

The videos will air on Universal Sports now through the end of 2009 during coverage of winter sports events and on UniversalSports.com.

Nyman’s Everest? Winning the overall World Cup title. “It’s important because, I think setting that goal and working at that, seeing that progression, fighting for it, it’s something you’ve invested a lot of time in and you’re putting forth your best effort,” says Nyman in his video. “To become overall world champion is definitely a goal of mine, and I know I’m capable. It’s a whole puzzle and when it all comes together I think the satisfaction will be tremendous.”

Though he has much more he would like to accomplish in the sport, Sullivan has reached an Everest of his own in winning the 2008 Chamonix World Cup downhill. “I finally attained my goal of being at the top of the podium in a World Cup race, and on that day I was the fastest guy in the world on skis,” says Sullivan in his video. “My future Everest would be holding that downhill globe at the end of the year that signifies the overall title.”

Moguls skier Bahrke cited her Everest as her 2002 Gold Cup win, which qualified her for the Salt Lake City Games where she won a silver medal. “To me that was just like the epitome of what you want to do as an athlete,” says Bahrke. “I know that I have it in me to compete just as well, if not better, than I did in those Games, that I can prove to myself and everyone else that I can make it again.”

“Everyone has an Everest dream. The ‘What’s Your Everest?’ program is the perfect complement to the Champion brand message about living an active lifestyle and striving for personal achievement,” said Claire Powell, director of Champion apparel marketing. “Through these amazing Olympians, we want to engage the everyday athlete and provide an opportunity for one of them to achieve something they may feel is unattainable.”

Universal Sports expects the videos to reach 55 million households in major markets around the country as part of Champion apparel’s “What’s Your Everest” marketing campaign and online community to support people in reaching their personal aspirations and goals.

Visitors to Champion’s Everest Web site may enter the “What’s Your Everest?” community by submitting a video or written entry answering the question for a chance to win $10,000.

“By partnering with Champion Athletic Apparel, our hope is for the fans of Universal Sports of all ages and backgrounds to be motivated by the dedication of these amazing athletes to declare their own Everest,” said Doug Neiman, vice president of sales and sponsorships. “With gold medal and other aspirations, these athletes show that every person has dreams that can be achieved through personal strength and motivation.”
