Pellinen, Holmlund take ski cross World Cup in Meiringen, Teller 5th

Swede Anna Holmlund and Finn Jouni Pellinen secured World Cup victories today (March 6) in Meiringen-Hasliberg, Switzerland.

Holmlund earned her seventh career World Cup win by outlasting Switerland’s Katrin Mueller, who finished second on home snow. Seven-time overall World Cup champion, Frence’s Ophelie David finished third while reigning world champion, Canadian Kelsey Serwa slipped to fourth in the women’s final.

On the men’s side, Pellinen took his career first World Cup by edging past World Cup leader, Andreas Matt of Austria in second. German Daniel Bohnacker followed up his frist World Cup win in December at Alpe d Huez with his second career podium in third.

As in the women’s race, another Canadian landed just off the podium in fourth as world champion Chris Del Bosco collected his sixth top-five finish of the season. He stands second in the overall rankings with 435 points behind Matt with 679.

X Games champion, American John Teller won the small final to finish fifth today and move to fourth in the overall standings with 299 points.

Teller, who has been working all season to improve his qualifying runs, ran 10th Saturday to qualify for Sunday’s finals. The top eight in qualifying get priority in lane choice during the finals, an important advantage.

In both the first heat and quarterfinals, Teller was second in his group, advancing him to the semifinals. For the semifinals, he got out of the gate third, but wasn’t able to find the opening he needed to move into second and make his way into the championship round.

Making the small final, Teller got out of the gate and found himself at the back of the pack. With a deft move over the first gap hit, he jumped two spots to get into second. Biding his time over the remaining course, Teller found his opportunity to take the lead in the final stretch crossing the line first to win the small final and finish fifth on the day.

“It was a good race, a lot of passing,” said Teller. “The whole season, it has been really key to have such hard work from my teammates. It is really cool that the ASCA [American Ski Cross Association] team is helping each other, because without them there is no way I would’ve done what I’ve done this season.”

World Cup ski cross racing moves to Branas, Sweden, Mar. 13 for the penultimate race of the season.
