Several Canadian media outlets are reporting that Canadian alpine racer Allison Forsyth will announce her retirement from World Cup racing during a press conference scheduled for Wednesday at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
Alpine Canada has scheduled a press conference for that time and place but officials are staying mum on the details.
Forsyth, 29, has registered five World Cup podiums in giant slalom during her career, four of those second-place finishes. She also won a bronze in giant slalom at the 2003 World Championships.
Alpine Canada CEO Ken Read told The Canadian Press that the World Championships medal was particularly important. Not only was it the first time in more than 20 years that a Canadian woman won a technical medal at the World Championships, it also came on the heels of the embarrassment of the Canadian coaching staff being fired while still on the hill at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.
“I can’t emphasis enough how important that result was,” Read said in The Canadian Press. “It was a breakthrough.”
Forsyth tore ligaments in her left knee and suffered extensive bruising to her tibia and femur while training for the downhill race at the 2006 Olympics in Torino. She required surgery and missed the 2006-07 season. She was back on the hill for off-season training last summer, but re-injured her knee before the first World Cup race of the season. She required more surgery and was unable to compete in 2007-08.
