STOWE, Vt. — The NorAm technical races are back in full swing in the Eastern U.S. as the men contested two giant slaloms on Monday (Feb. 3) and Tuesday (Feb. 4) at Stowe Mountain Resort while the ladies did the same at Sunday River, Maine. Snowbird’s Brennan Rubie, a B Team member of the U.S. Ski Team, charged into second place in the seasonal standings after claiming two decisive victories down the Main Street slope. Canadian national team athlete Dustin Cook grabbed the giant slalom leader’s bib with his podium performance on Tuesday.

Clear skies greeted skiers atop Spruce Peak for both days of racing. A firm surface awaited the return of a solid NorAm field that hasn’t contested a race since the Vail series ended in December. On Monday, Rubie led after the first run followed by the University of Utah’s Mark Engel and the U.S. Ski Team’s Nick Daniels in second and third, respectively. Canadian ski teamer Sasha Zaitsoff, fourth after the first run, laid down the fastest combined time before the first run leaders took to the second course, and it seemed as if he might escape with a surprise victory after Daniels skied out and Engel straddled a GS gate.

Rubie was nowhere to be seen, and a course hold ensued.

“Did I just win?” Zaitsoff asked aloud of the crowd gathered in the finish area. But before the faux celebration could begin, Rubie was spotted at the top of the course, carving smooth turns down a track that rattled many other skiers. Although Zaitsoff produced the fastest second run, Rubie claimed the race victory by over half a second. Vermont native Ryan Cochran-Siegle finished third for his first step onto a GS podium since 2011.

“That’s the best snow that I have skied on in a long time. I can’t believe it turned into a boilerplate, but I was pumped because it seemed like it was a pretty fair race for everybody—all the young guys had a good chance to move up,” Rubie noted. “It’s never easy to win a race… when it comes down to it, you have to beat everybody else out there, and everybody’s charging and everybody wants it. I was happy to come away with the win, but I wasn’t expecting it. … I haven’t (led after first run) enough yet, but so far I’m okay with it. It’s just like any other run, I try not to do things any differently. Just have to go out there and execute.”

Rubie repeated his execution on Tuesday, besting first run leader Cook by 0.69 after tying Engel for the fastest second run. Cook finished as runner-up but still holds a 32-point lead over Rubie in the NorAm giant slalom standings. Ford Swette, a Canadian development team skier formerly of BC Alpine, rounded out the podium in third and was also the top junior in the race.

The ladies faced similar weather at Sunday River where Stratton Mountain School graduate and former national development team athlete Libby Gibson, now skiing for Vail, returned to the East to grab a career-best result on Monday. Forget about baby steps into the top 10 or crawling onto the podium. Gibson harnessed the momentum from a recent fourth-place finish at the FISU in Montana to ski the fastest second run and take the win at Sunday River. Her previous best NorAm result had been 15th at the Vail race in December, and she has now nearly halved her points with these latest two results.

“The snow was pretty inconsistent, icy in spots and soft in others, but all in all it had a nice grip to it. My strategy was honestly just to ski the way I have been and send it! The set was pretty straight forward so it was full attack mode,” said Gibson. “I was pretty surprised. It’s one thing for your coaches to tell you that you have enough speed to win, but it’s a whole different feeling to actually win.”

Gibson’s former develop squad teammate, Paula Moltzan, who recently returned from racing in Europe, was second, and the University of Vermont’s Kate Ryley skied to third. Gibson and Moltzan, still juniors, gladly shared the podium with the fastest senior on the day.

Intensity rose on Tuesday as French World Cup regular Taina Barioz arrived fresh from Kranjska Gora, Slovenia to polish up her form. She skied the fastest runs down both courses and combined for a winning time just under half a second quicker than runner-up Candace Crawford of the Canadian development team. Crawford’s teammate Mikaela Tommy, also a junior, finished third. The U.S. Ski Team’s Katharine Irwin was the top American in sixth.
