Ryan and Irwin top 10 in Junior Worlds super G

One year ago, Switzerland’s Corinne Suter finished second in the Junior World Championship super G to Austrian Stephanie Venier. This year she exacted her revenge and claimed the first Swiss gold of the season, while Venier claimed silver and last season’s bronze medal winner, the aptly-named Rosina Schneeberger, repeated for her second bronze medal of the 2014 Jasna meet and matched her super G finish of 2013.

Austrian Elisabeth Kappaurer, with three finishes off the podium but all fifth or better, put that behind her by capturing an extremely close win in the super combined after a slalom leg was added to the super G results. Swede Lisa Blomqvist got the combined silver, 0.03 off Kappaurer with German Marina Wallner 0.04 back for bronze. Schneeberger just missed out on her fourth career World Junior bronze, finishing fourth at 0.23 back, but just 0.09 from third.

The Americans fared better in the super G than the combined, with Aspen’s Katie Ryan registering fifth, a hundredth off Kappaurer’s time, and Vail’s Katharine Irwin coming in eighth.

“The run was interesting in that the start was moved down several gates, so it took out some of the pitch, but for my run I decided to get a little hairy with it and I took a deeper line than I would have normally,” said Ryan. “I was pretty technically sound. It was a good day for Austria … and the U.S. as well.”

“I think I did leave some speed on the hill. I had a few little mistakes I’m hoping to clean up for the downhill, but overall it was a pretty good day,” said Irwin. “We were on this hill last year at the Europa Cup and I unfortunately crashed and was injured, so I’m excited to get another chance at this hill, trying to get my redemption.”

Paula Moltzan contributed 26th and Breezy Johnson was 31st. Alice Merryweather and Lila Lapanja finished 37th and 38th, respectively. The top Canadian skier was Mikaela Tommy in 34th.

It was Incline Village, Nevada’s Lapanja who turned in the fastest slalom leg of the group to jump up to 17th in the super combined. Canadian Valerie Grenier improved from 40th in the super G to finish 19th in the combined. No other North Americans were able to crack the top 30. Merryweather finished 32nd, Ryan 33rd, Irwin 44th, and Johnson 52nd.
