One year after the tragic death of skiing icon Sarah Burke, those closest to her have formed a charity in her honor.

“Though she won countless medals, trophies, and championship titles, she will be most remembered for her glowing personality, generosity, and compassion for others,” read a statement from the organization. “It is in keeping with Sarah’s spirit of giving, that those close to her are proud to formally announce the formation of the Sarah Burke Foundation.”

The Sarah Burke Foundation will be non-profit organization dedicated to carrying Sarah’s legacy onward. The Foundation will raise funds through a variety of means to carry out its mission statement – “to provide inspiration and support to those in need.” Fundraising activities will include providing scholarships to athletes and donating to organizations Sarah would have personally chosen to support.

“Sarah had too many amazing qualities to list, but two of the most obvious ones were her love of winter sports, and her commitment to helping people in need,” said Burke’s husband and Foundation President Rory Bushfield.   “We are honored to be able to continue Sarah’s practice of giving through the Sarah Burke Foundation and are grateful for the tremendous support we have received.”

The Sarah Burke Foundation launches with three immediate fundraising initiatives, the sale of Sarah Burke Snowflake diamond jewelry necklaces, Lil Wayne limited edition TRUKFIT Sarah Burke t-shirts, and the Sarah Burke Memorial I/OS Smith Optics Goggle. Each jeweled snowflake pendant is handcrafted by Joyce’s Fine Jewelry and inspired by Sarah’s own snowflake tattoo. A portion of all net proceeds from the sale of TRUKFIT shirts and all proceeds from sales of Sarah Burke Snowflakes and the Sarah Burke Memorial I/OS Goggle will benefit the Sarah Burke Foundation.
