Sarah Schleper has torn ACL, out for seasonAmerican Sarah Schleper learned Wednesday that she has a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus damage, a result of a GS crash in Hafjell, Norway, on Sunday.

In an e-mail, Schleper said she wasn’t sure how she crashed, but remembers sliding on her side through a panel and winding up in the fence. When she stood and eventually tried to click back into her bindings, her knee buckled and she heard a pop. She was taken down the hill on a sled, and took the first flight back to the States.

Schleper was diagnosed by Dr. Bill Sterett on Wednesday.

The news is a tough blow to Schleper, who had just returned to the World Cup tour in late December after recovering from back surgery. With a 10th-place finish in the Olympic slalom, and season-best ninth in an Ofterschwang GS right before the Games, Schleper appeared to be rounding back into the form that brought her her first World Cup win at the end of last season.

In her e-mail, Schleper said she is remaining postive and motivated. “I am a little bummed that I have to sit the surfing season out,” she admitted. “I think this will be great for my back, however.”
