The Head Racing Team has inked Austria’s Rainer Schoenfelder to a multi-year contract, according to a company press release.
“I am planning to compete in all disciplines next year and to do so I need top equipment,” Schoenfelder said in explaining his decision.
Schoenfelder has five World Cup wins — all in slalom. Head has signed a number of accomplished racers, particularly on the speed side, in recent years, and the exploits of Bode Miller, Didier Cuche and Hermann Maier last season pushed the brand to the top of the FIS rankings in downhill and super G for 2007-08.
“For us, quality is more important than quantity”, said Head CEO Johan Eliasch. “Rainer Schoenfelder is an extraordinary character and an excellent skier; that makes him the perfect match. It goes without saying that he offers great marketing potential as well.”
Head Racing Director Rainer Salzgeber also is pleased about the new team member.
“Rainer is Austrian and a remarkable character who will be a real asset for our team, and in addition to this he will be very important for our R&D department because he’s a real tinkerer and fiddles about until everything is just right. We are very much looking forward to working with him.”
Schoenfelder said he made his decision after thorough consideration. “I have been testing extensively. We really put the material through its paces with a focus on slalom and giant slalom for a six-day period. After this my decision was clear: The package fits perfectly, even though we will keep on fine-tuning the details. This step brings me closer to my goal of winning the overall World Cup in one of the coming three years with Head.”
