Olympic silver medalist Shannon Bahrke recently found time amidst her busy schedule to give a special visitor some ski tips. Lawrence Beldon-Smythe, host of the Travel Channel's "Lawrence of America," paid a visit to Bahrke, a U.S. freestyle team athlete, to get some insight into her life. Bahrke will appear in "Lawrence of America" on the Travel Channel on Monday, June 30 at 9 p.m. MT.
"It's flattering that they chose me to do it," Bahrke said. "The show is about this crazy Brit that comes to America and goes all around the country doing really fun stuff and gets a flavor for the U.S.A."
Lawrence of America follows the travels of Beldon-Smythe, a British adventurer, as he travels throughout the United States and immerses himself in the various cultures he encounters. For Bahrke's episode, Beldon-Smythe tried his hand at several Olympic sports in Utah including speed skating with Olympian Derek Parra as well as luge at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City.
According to Bahrke, Beldon-Smythe not only observed her daily routine but he also attempted to do the activities she did including workouts at the U.S. Ski Team's temporary training gym. The Team anxiously awaits the completion of the first national training and education center for skiing and snowboarding, the Center of Excellence in March 2009.
"We did a little mogul hill behind my house that I build in the summer time out of dirt. Then we went to the gym and I ran him through some of my training and it was pretty fun," Bahrke said. "He gave it a good effort… we'll see how they edit it."
Bahrke, who had Beldon-Smythe out of breath by the time he was finished at the training center, said she is excited to see the episode she appears in.
"I told all my friends and family that it's going to be on, so we'll probably have a big party and have everyone over to watch it," she said.
