JASNA, SLOVAKIA – Young gun Adrian Smiseth Sejersted from Norway took the men’s downhill title at the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships on Sunday (March 2), clocking a time of 1 minute and 17.31 seconds. A mere 0.02 and 0.09 seconds behind were Germany’s Thomas Dressen and Austria’s Marco Schwarz, who raced to silver and bronze, respectively.

The golden title now completes Sejersted’s set of medals as the 19-year-old already took super combined silver on Feb. 26 and the super-G bronze at the 2013 Junior Worlds in Quebec, Canada.

“I am extremely happy with my performance!” exclaimed Sejersted. “Today went really well. I did very good in the upper part of the slope and made a small mistake in the lower section but it was good enough to make the victory. It’s such a great feeling! I certainly want to continue this way.”

In the 2012/13 season, the strongest of his career to date, Sejersted claimed victory in five FIS races and became the national downhill champion. Dressen and Schwarz are are also familiar faces on the Junior Worlds podium. Dressen took giant slalom silver at the 2012 event in Roccaraso, Italy, while Schwarz raced to super-G gold in Jasna less than a week ago, on Feb. 26.

The race originally scheduled for March 1 was rescheduled because of difficult weather conditions.

Canadian development team member William Schuessler Bedard was the top North American in 13th.

The U.S. Ski Team’s Brian McLaughlin, originally from the Green Mountain Valley School (GMVS), finished 16th to lead the American men at the race. Carrabassett Valley Academy’s Sam Morse, in 17th, stood in second on the U18 podium. Another GMVS alumnus, Sandy Vietze, also finished inside the top group with 29th.

“I’m pleased with the way our guys skied. If you look at the times, it was a pretty tight race and it’s great to see Sam [Morse] right in there among the other guys in his age group,” said men’s development team coach Randy Pelkey. “There was some swirling wind and the track did improve as the race went on, but the guys who finished top three certainly deserved to be there. It was a real deal podium. The slippers were able to move out the snow a bit more which made for a different surface for the later start numbers. It became an opportunity and the medalists took advantage of that.”
