Ski jumping official Fritz Mittelstadt dies at 89{mosimage}EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame member Fritz Mittelstadt of Eau Claire, chief of ski jumping officials at the 1980 Olympics and a longtime nordic official for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, died Thursday. He was 89.

Born on a farm in Eau Claire County, he was a ski jumper as a youngster. Mittelstadt, a graduate of the University of Maryland, became a career Air Force officer, flying combat missions as a bomber pilot during World War II. He retired in 1968 and became director of emergency government for Marathon County, Wis., before retiring in 1987.

He was an official of USSA’s Central Division for many years, including vice president for two years and a board member for 10. He served as chief of competition or technical delegate for a variety of major jumping events in this country in addition to judging overseas.

Mittelstadt is survived by his widow Arlene, his wife of 68 years, plus four daughters and a son. A viewing at Smith Funeral Chapel, 2222 London Road, is scheduled for Monday, 4-7 p.m., with a funeral service Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.
